The Importance of NDC Technology in Flight Ticket Sales

IATA's NDC standard is liberating airline distribution from legacy GDS infrastructure, offering agencies and travelers richer content, real-time pricing, and personalization capabilities.

What Is NDC?

NDC (New Distribution Capability) is an XML-based communication standard initiated by IATA to modernize airline content distribution. Traditional GDS systems are built on legacy EDIFACT protocols and only support limited data transfer — essentially fares and seat availability. NDC enables airlines to deliver ancillary products such as extra baggage, seat selection, meals, insurance, and dynamic packages directly to agencies, along with rich media content.

The Core Difference Between GDS and NDC

In GDS systems, fare content is loaded centrally into the ATPCO database and all agencies see the same static prices. In the NDC model, the airline generates real-time pricing offers from its own system, enabling dynamic pricing by passenger segment and personalized offers. Rich content — cabin photos, seat maps, and ancillary service descriptions — significantly increases conversion rates on agency platforms.

Practical Implications for Travel Agencies

NDC adoption offers concrete advantages: differentiated content and pricing to overcome commission pressure, improved cost structure as GDS booking fees decrease, and better data quality through direct airline connections. Modern travel technology platforms combine both GDS and NDC channels in a single interface, allowing agencies to navigate the transition seamlessly.

Key Considerations for NDC Adoption

NDC integration is technically complex. Main challenges include API version differences, implementation inconsistencies across airlines, and adapting ticketing rules to NDC workflows. Partnering with an IATA Level 3 certified technology provider is therefore critical for success.
